Ruling of the Appellate Chamber of the Suriname Court of Justice
The Heads of Mission accredited to Suriname of Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union have taken note of the December 20, 2023, ruling of the Appellate Chamber of the Court of Justice in the December 8 Criminal Proceeding.
Today’s ruling closes a very difficult chapter in the history of Suriname. We commend the Court of Justice and its branches that have presided over this case for the past 23 years and have, often under very challenging circumstances, sought to uphold the rule of law and bring justice for the 15 victims of December 8, 1982, and their families. We commend the integrity and independence of Suriname’s judiciary.
We hope that the final disposition of this case will enable all Surinamers to come to terms with the past and to advance the cause of peaceful reconciliation while ensuring that atrocities like those committed on December 8, 1982, are never repeated.
