Op vrijdag 1 maart jl. heeft het ministerie van Economische Zaken, Ondernemerschap en Technologische Innovatie (EZ), een belangrijke infosessie georganiseerd om de samenleving, importeurs, distributeurs en winkeliers te informeren over de werkzaamheden van de Economische Controle Dienst (ECD) ter bescherming van de samenleving. De sessie, gericht op de Wet Economische Delicten, begon met een toespraak van directeur Suraksha Hirasingh, gevolgd door een presentatie van Pertabsingh Goerdayal, die sinds 1 februari aan het hoofd staat van de ECD.<\/p>\n

Goerdayal benadrukte tijdens zijn presentatie dat de focus van de ECD gericht is op de artikelen 4, 5 en 6 van de Wet Economische Delicten. Hij legde uit dat artikel 4 een beschrijving geeft van strafmaatregelen die direct kunnen worden toegepast, terwijl artikel 5 voorziet in bijzondere straffen en artikel 6 in bijzondere maatregelen. De hoogste strafmaat volgens artikel 4 omvat een gevangenisstraf van maximaal zes jaar en een geldboete van maximaal 1 miljoen SRD. Bij niet-opzettelijke overtredingen geldt een minimum van vier jaar gevangenisstraf en een geldboete van maximaal 500.000 SRD. De ECD heeft sinds 1 februari zijn acties op het veld opgevoerd met vijf ploegen. Elke ploeg bestaat uit vier personen, en elke ploeg moet ten minste vijf handelszaken controleren.<\/p>\n
